Frequently asked questions
What do I lose if I disconnect from the cloud?
The things the cloud provides: *.keenrig.com subdomains and the Console for managing several servers. (Managed backup storage and cloud AI belong in this group too, but they are still coming.) Apps, databases, certificates for your own domain and the whole admin panel on your server keep working. The Cloud Link page in the admin panel lists what keeps running, what stops, and which apps only have a Keenrig address, with a link to add your own domain to each.
I do not know what DNS is. Can I still use this?
Yes. Choose the ready-made subdomain and the cloud handles both the DNS records and the certificate; you never touch a record. If you later want your own domain, from Pro we help you buy and point it.
How is this different from Cloudron?
It keeps what Cloudron does well — an all-inclusive admin experience for self-hosted apps. It differs in three ways: the admin panel works straight away on your server’s IP address, so a domain is not a prerequisite; ready-made subdomains and certificates for non-technical users; and an optional cloud layer — without it, your server keeps its core capability.
Do I have to pay to self-host?
Not necessarily. Starter is free forever for 1 server and 3 apps: install it on your machine, no account required, no mandatory outbound network calls. Paid plans unlock unlimited apps (and more servers from Pro), instant *.keenrig.com subdomains, the Console for several servers and installation support. Managed backup storage and cloud AI come later. Your server and your domain stay in your name; Keenrig does not sell domains.
Where does my data live?
On your machine. The platform database, application data and user accounts all live on your server. The cloud only holds the list of paired servers, pairing codes, billing and the DNS records of your *.keenrig.com subdomains — nothing your server needs in order to run.
